York County Fleet Record Lists 240 Vehicles and $9.05 Million in Recorded Cost/Value

The County's fleet workbook identifies 240 vehicles across departments, with the Sheriff's Office holding the largest count. The release also includes 2026 purchase and sale tabs, while several fields requested by RTK Media are not present in the main inventory.

York County Fleet Record Lists 240 Vehicles and $9.05 Million in Recorded Cost/Value

York County has released its current fleet workbook in response to an RTK Media Right-to-Know request seeking the County's vehicle inventory in native electronic format.

RTK Media filed request R000403-082726 on August 27, 2026. The request asked for the year, make and model, fleet or vehicle identification number, assigned department, employee or position if maintained, acquisition date and cost, mileage and current status of County vehicles.

York County invoked a 30-day extension on September 3 and released the responsive workbook on September 30. The County also advised that some information was redacted where disclosure could threaten personal security or public safety or reveal information about an individual performing undercover or covert law-enforcement activity.

The main inventory lists 240 vehicles

RTK Media's review identified 240 vehicle records in the main fleet inventory. Of those, 231 contain a numeric entry in the workbook's Cost/Value column. Those entries total $9,054,864.41.

That figure should not be read as the County fleet's current market value. The spreadsheet labels the field "Cost/Value" and does not explain whether every entry represents original acquisition cost, another recorded value or a mixture of valuation methods.

The workbook lists 158 Ford vehicles and 52 Chevrolets, making those the two most common manufacturers in the inventory.

One-third of the listed vehicles are model year 2016 or older

The median model year in the inventory is 2017. RTK Media counted 80 vehicles from model year 2016 or earlier, representing one-third of the listed fleet. Twenty-nine are model year 2011 or earlier.

The oldest vehicle year in the workbook is 1993. Older model years alone do not establish that a vehicle is unsafe or should be replaced; mileage, maintenance history, duty cycle and condition would be needed for that analysis.

The workbook separately tracks 2026 purchases and sales

A second tab lists four vehicle purchases totaling $200,282.75: three assigned to the Sheriff's Office and one to 911.

A third tab lists seven vehicles sold in 2026 for combined proceeds of $41,240. Their recorded Cost/Value entries total $230,655.08. Comparing those two numbers is not a measure of a financial loss because the vehicles were acquired in prior years and had already provided years of service before sale.

Several requested fields are not in the main inventory

The main spreadsheet contains seven columns: Vehicle #, Year, Make, Model, Tag, Department and Cost/Value.

It does not contain columns for acquisition date, current mileage, assigned employee or position, or an explicit current status field, although those items were included in RTK Media's request to the extent maintained.

The County's response does not specify whether each absent field is not maintained in the fleet report, was omitted from the export, or was affected by the safety and undercover-related redactions described in the response.
